Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop
August 8 is the Feast Day of Australia's first saint,
Mary of the Cross MacKillop.

Saint Mary founded the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart when she was 25-years-old. The Sisters vowed to live in poverty, own no property and were committed to equality. They ministered to the poor, running a number of children's homes, and founded schools and convents.
Saint Mary of the Cross was born in Melbourne on 15 January 1842 and died on 8 August 1909. She was canonised on 17 October 2010.
