St Patrick’s College Townsville
St Patrick's College Townsville Ltd is a secondary day and residential Catholic college located in Townsville and catering for the young women of North Queensland and beyond.
History of the ministry
St Patrick's was founded in 1878, making its buildings among the oldest in Townsville.
Only 47 years after Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin and less than 20 years after the sisters came to Brisbane, a small group of Mercy sisters braved wilderness conditions to establish a school on The Strand in Townsville, a school that could accommodate boarders as well as day scholars.
The sisters were pioneers of Christian education, braving harsh conditions with few resources to ensure children of the Outback had access to an education. Today, the school still has a strong commitment to the education of students from remote communities of northern Queensland, the Torres Strait Islands, and Papua New Guinea.
The Townsville Mercy Congregation transferred canonical governance of the ministry to Mercy Partners in 2011.
